USB stick MP3 Player labled Nextar (apparent cross infection – PC / Mobile PC)

A USB stick MP3 Player labled Nextar (apparent cross infection – PC / Mobile PC)

Funny thing happened when plugging in (to desktop pc) a USB stick MP3 Player labled Nextar (cross infection) from a friend. Read on.

Possibly a black market relabled fake and there are apparent even criminal “clone” or “phisher” or “pharmer” sites around emusic.com. Suddenly, an apparent “cross infection” ocuured in the Pocket PC Windows Mobile – a mass emailing worm ! Isn’t that fun (sarcasm).

Uh Oh…….

Name: Adware.Win32.eMusic Toolbar http://www.emsisoft.com/en/malware/?Adware.Win32.eMusic+Toolbar

FORENSICS:

FILES Detected…. (apparently instantly – inserting USB MP3 Player)

DESKTOP: (windows xp home)

#emusic.oem

#emusiclogo.gif

#Trys to connect to “malicious host” emusic.com / apparent back door threat ? Blocked. USB Stick removed. Still attempts to connect after PC restarted or using media player(s). Seems a registry hook possible ? Scanned, not found. Looking manually.

SYMPTOMOLGY:

Stick in and out (on desktop). The continuing attempt to re-connect to “emusic.com” indicates either a registry hook of some sort or worst is a rootkit as not visual in the registry. See the Sony Rootkit nightmare.

#SCANNED – FOUND: MOBILE PC (Windows CE 3.0 / Pocket PC 2002)

Installs apparent mass emailing worm as possible part of “cross infection”:

#FlashMates_(v1[1].0.4)_Setup.exe / which is identified as Email-Worm.Win32.Apbost!IK [Ikarus antivirus = IK]

NOTES: ……
New start up after quarantine and emusic connect attempt blocked again (antimalware program). A registry hook (originally suspected as cause) generally is involved with one entity (unless multiple), here media players, that is easily detected and  deleted. This did show files in two media players (with premium features) and now has jumped to Windows Media Player – which symptomology is as a self replicating worm does, but apparently here – as indeed a rootkit does – is as like a matrix that continually can give various commands (more powerful than a trojan and can continually install more software) and is best best guess of the symptoms experienced. The activity shows the “matrix” (several) commands severally or mutiple times after deletions which is almost as the self replicating worm does when deleted and is reinstalled elsewhere but finally gets deleted by antivirus. This indicates the rootkit activity as quite posible and the infection.

Comment: About the spam, a personal mesage not spam

February 11, 2009 by pdamobilecafe

About the spam…. a personal message not spam

These are abandoned Yahoo Groups

myppcnews , Pocket_PC_Community , the_pocketpc , more.

….but remarkably still with active members. I am intentionally sending off multiple informational posts that may be called spam in un-social destinations. In reality, computer users are deemed even grossly unaware of necessary security in average computing which can include Updates / Upgrades / Patch / Fix issued by Microsoft and computer manufacturers. There is, as well, a vast community of free help given across the ‘Net for computer problems encountered – whether real bugs and so on or simple “computer dummy” issues.

The internet was never created as a library for geeks. It has ALWAYS been advertised as the world wide web for families and friends to communicate greatly all their interests and gab, and as well as a complete E-Commercial destination for many. These, the rude and malicious, and inordinate call “spammers”. The official and legal definition of “spam” is UCE Unsolicited Commercial Email and NONE other – of the which I have never posted and never will. But said that to say this…. for those who call any posts I make as what they would perhaps call an over involved individual and total spammer – well shove it. I just made the point. In fact the active are praised as zealous – which is complimentary to any society. You would indeed be anti-social as far as the internet is concerned and families and friends and – indeed – active members on the world wide web as well as all commercial publications and e-zines and so on, and on and on and on …. who are you kidding ? You define a personal attack and that is illegal too who call persons like me spammers. So before you open your mouth – shut it with your foot in it !

On behalf of mobile pc yahoo themed groups and mobile pc and ON-Topic Posting, let’s continue to post these to keep the message boards with these – on topic posts – and not allow the others to continue to abuse Yahoo Groups RSS reader feeds with even unlawful UCE and Solicitations, and observed worldwide, “under the wire” of the Law and Customer Care and Abuse Teams. REAL Spammers do this. They purvey illicit sales and generally these type emails with their destinations are the focus of legal investigations and prosecutions daily by World governments and the Security Industry in the Private Sector as well as Organizations in the Community Service areas.

New PDAMobileCafe AvantGo Channel launched

February 7, 2009 by pdamobilecafe

Sep 16
New PDAMobileCafe AvantGo Channel launched …..

From our PDA Mobile Cafe website (sub domain at my www.BlueCollarPC.Net ) there is the PDA Wireless webpage here:
http://www.pdamobilecafe.bluecollarpc.net/pdawireless.html

Our new PDA Mobile Cafe AvantGo Channel here (view online) …. http://mysite.verizon.net/gerald_309/id16.html

…..is a scaled down optimized wireless webpage now available as an AvantGo Channel and you can simply click the AvantGo Button to add the channel and make any changes you wish as far as size and links depth and sync frequency, etc.

Basically it is a large directory of wireless websites including directories of wireless websites. This saves a lot of room in like Bookmarks and also you can easily bookmark any favorites out of the hundreds listed. Our channel has been tested and works very nicely even though it has that perhaps homely look of a personal web rather than a professional. We’ll try to snaz it without much in graphics to keep it fast loading as it is now.

There is a convenient search box for the website or online Google search (click option – site/web) off to the right side and also a forms box for emailing the webmaster with Comments, Report a dead link, add a link, feedback, etc. All in all – everything works well and it is a fast loader.

We hope this may make your mobile life a little more streamlined and do consider mobile antivirus if you surf the wireless web or do the wi-fi download route ! The Symbian Mobile OS has really been hammered. TIP: AirScanner.Com offers a mobile firewall, as well as mobile antivirus (excellent with wireless definitions downloads) if you heavily traffic to avoid direct hacking. You can buy their antivirus and various products separately or in bundled packages. They support newer Windows Mobile 6.

Enjoy ! And have a mobile day !

Classic Mobile 6.0 and Mobile 6.1

February 7, 2009 by pdamobilecafe

Sep 8
Hello all from the PDA Mobile Cafe WebLog….

I may have really been an Advanced User on the Windows Mobile CE 3.0 (Pocket PC 2002) but what a difference a day has made. For the record, I began with a Compaq iPaq 3765 (3700 Series) – but this was one of the particular models that was not eligible for the Windows Mobile 2003 Upgrade. That was highly insulting – owning a state of the art Windows Mobile PC and suddenly there was a major Operating System (OS) Upgrade that included the vital upgrade of wireless security of the WPA 256bit encryption and my model was not eligible. It wouldn’t be long before it went the way of the Windows 98 Desktop.

Of course being security minded as also Webmaster of the www.BlueCollarPC.Net – I am no idiot and there was no way I was going to continue on wireless internet. The 3700 Series Windows Mobile handhelds were nothing lame. They were kind of the cusp between the older CE 2.0 and Windows PalmTops PPC and the newer 3800 and 3900 Series Handhelds that came out. About half of the 3700 series were eligible for the Mobile 2003 Upgrade and half were not. The 3700 Series were not game boy toys, mine was $500 ! It included Outlook 2002 free. So long story short – I have ‘milked’ my 3765 for all it is worth before ever buying a newer model obviously.

And here we are shopping. I have found some of the 5.0 ’s have had troubles, particularly with battery drains. I have found what I was interested in – just the PDA without all the “telephony”. I now know these are called “Windows Mobile 6 Classic”. The additions in these Windows Classic 6.0 PDAs include WPA Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR. To boot, the Bluetooth capabilities will log right in with a Cellular Phone with Bluetooth – so there you are and if necessary.

So in axing the Microsoft Outlook mail clients, apparently it is made up with an inboard WiFi modem and sort of memory card as the add in 256M Flash ROM memory. It does begin with the 64M SDRAM Main Memory which of course is twice the size as the older models at 32M – whereby adding the Compact Flash Jacket boosted it to 64M and added card capability at under a $100. Apparently, the compact jacket is now inboard as far as card slots. That is a big minus-bulky plus !

All in all – if you just want a new PDA with great features and now plenty of memory off the shelf I recommend the Classic 6.0 models and particularly the HP iPaq 111….. and of course it is best to get at least a mobile antivirus package. You can find a good list here: http://www.pdamobilecafe.bluecollarpc.net/index.html

Also as far as synching on Windows Vista – UH OH…… I am finding the Classic 6.0 versions ship with Windows Mobile Media Player Version 10 and the Desktop/Laptop Vista empowered PCs ship with Windows Media Player Version 11. Of course the Windows Media Player allows transferring media files through synchronization to the Mobile PC. There are others like J River Media Jukebox with these capabilities and is highly recommended. I use it on both XP and Vista, does great and is loaded with features and capabilities. Strongly recommended.

I do not know yet if there are specific issues with the different versions of Windows Media Players and if even an Upgrade was released to Classic 6.0 models and if not these are going to be called the Windows XP Classic PDAs and not fully Vista compatible….. BUT check this out and I will post more as I find more…..
